The Larry H. Miller Company/Miller Family unveiled renderings and details today of the “The Power District” -- a 100-acre development where the company wants to put a stadium for a potential Salt Lake City MLB expansion team. The site sits adjacent to the Utah State Fairpark and the Jordan River, west of downtown Salt Lake City, near Interstate 80 and SLC International Airport. No MLB expansion process has been officially announced, but groups in Portland, Raleigh, and Nashville are joining Salt Lake City in assembling potential bids if MLB expansion plans are ever confirmed.
Larry H. Miller Real Estate is working with design firm Sasaki on what it calls the placemaking vision of the Power District. Sasaki does some sports facility design, including a recent basketball practice facility at Boston College and a LEED Gold-certified hockey arena at Colgate Univ., but the Boston-based firm is better known globally for its award-winning urban planning and community design practice.
The LHM Company’s release described the site as “shovel ready.” Development at the Power District is scheduled to begin in late 2024 with the construction of the new headquarters for Rocky Mountain Power. The Miller Family, whose patriarch, Larry Miller , passed away in 2009, owned the Jazz from 1985 until 2020, and built the Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City. The family owns the city’s Triple-A baseball team, the Salt Lake City Bees.
