Yankees radio broadcaster John Sterling "is retiring effective immediately after more than three decades in the booth." The news comes after the team had planned a "news conference for this weekend in which the 85-year-old Sterling was anticipated to retire, citing health concerns." WFAN will replace Sterling with Justin Shackil and Emmanuel Berbari , who were "already slated to call the majority of the road games this season with Suzyn Waldman " ( THE ATHLETIC, 4/15 ). Sterling called 5,420 regular-season and another 211 postseason Yankees games. He will be "recognized in a pregame ceremony on Saturday" prior to the Rays-Yankees game at Yankee Stadium ( N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 4/15 ).
